Seriously: does that not work for you? I tried
@ARTICLE{article-minimal,
author = {L[eslie] A. Aamport},
title = {The {\it Gnats\/} and Gnus Document Preparation System},
journal = {\mbox{G-Animal's} Journal},
year = 1986,
}
and it ran without any trouble.
