(When no arguments are given, OTOH, a frame is drawn around all areas. See http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/showframe .) NB: \showframe seems to be broken in the wiki's mkiv installation, which is old. The next example draws no frame, but if you remove the mode=mkii then all is well.
