Sorry for answering my question by myself. I fixed my issue (for now
at least) by defining a new formula. If anyone else is interested, the
solution is given below.

/Mikael

\setuplayout[
grid=tolerant,
]
\showgrid

\setupformulas[
spacebefore=,
spaceafter=,
]

\defineformula[line][
spacebefore=big,
spaceafter=big,
]

\starttext
\dorecurse{10}{This is a statement. }
\startformula
1+2+\cdots+(n-1)+n=\frac{1+n}{2}n.
\stopformula
\dorecurse{10}{This is a statement. }
\startlineformula
1+2+\cdots+(n-1)+n=\tfrac{1+n}{2}n.
\stoplineformula
\dorecurse{10}{This is a statement. }
\stoptext
