As far as I experienced, it does split the table, but only at row borders. Not within a row, as the word example. Tabulate does this kind of splitting. For my usecase, this was enough, though the other table environments have some goodies which the tabulate environment misses ... (But maybe these features - e.g. combining cells - are the reason why the splitting of cells doesn't work ...)
