The exit code from mtxrun works here:

printf '%s\n' '\bye' > good.tex && mtxrun --autogenerate --script context 
good.tex; echo $?
0

printf '%s\n' '\by' > bad.tex && mtxrun --autogenerate --script context 
bad.tex; echo $?
1
