I saw an archive on this but it was on two drivers trying to gain control of the same device so that doesn't apply here. I feel that I'm close on getting it running on my system.

We need a little more context from the syslog here. Chances are that there is either another instance of usbhid-ups still running, or the UPS is claimed by another process (the kernel HID UPS driver for instance).
