Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, August
7th, at 7:00 pm. The highlights of today's tape are AUDUBON'S
SHEARWATERS, SANDWICH TERN, AMERICAN AVOCETS, WHIMBRELS, and CORY'S
SHEARWATER.

Starting with a current bit of news, an AMERICAN AVOCET was found late
this afternoon at Sag Pond in Bridgehampton, sitting on a small pond
on the left, just before one turns into the parking lot at the end of
Sag Main Street.

Trips out on the CRESLI whale watch boats from Montauk on Monday and
Tuesday encountered good numbers of CORY'S and GREATER SHEARWATERS and
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS both days, a presumed MANX SHEARWATER Monday,
and on Tuesday two SOOTY SHEARWATERS, two PARASITIC JAEGERS, and two
BLACK TERNS. Whale numbers have been low, however.

A fishing boat going much farther out to warm water Sunday did
encounter four AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS in an area known as "the dip",
this following seven AUDUBON'S out there July 25th at different sites.

At Cupsogue County Park in West Hampton Dunes Sunday, an AMERICAN
AVOCET was reported flying over the flats, moving west. On the sand
spit at Pikes Beach just east of Cupsogue, and adult winter-plumaged
SANDWICH TERN sat at the tip with a dozen ROYAL TERNS for a while
Sunday afternoon. The SANDWICH disappeared on the rising tide, but
the ROYAL numbers increased to 25 or more. Two to four WHIMBREL were
present at both sites Sunday, down from the seven at Cupsogue Saturday
and six at Mecox Inlet last Friday. The Cupsogue to Pikes flats
continue to provide a variety of shorebirds, including some RED KNOTS
and a few 'WESTERN' WILLETS. BLACK TERNS are also appearing on the
Cupsogue flats and along the ocean front, where a small number of
CORY'S SHEARWATERS and one or two WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were noted
Sunday afternoon. About 15 CORY'S SHEARWATERS and some WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS also appeared off Montauk Point Saturday morning.

At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge the still very mucky East Pond has been
hosting a decent number of shorebirds, though variety will hopefully
continue to improve. On Saturday one or two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS
and five PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were present in the south end of the pond
up to the Raunt, where up to eight GULL-BILLED TERNS were also
roosting, with a BLACK TERN visiting the north end of the pond.
During the week, also found on the East Pond were a single RED KNOT
Monday, two LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS along with 29 STILT SANDPIPERS and
three PECTORAL SANDPIPERS Tuesday, and two BLACK and four GULL-BILLED
TERNS on Wednesday.

Large numbers of the expected shorebirds have also been around Jones
Inlet lately, and a WILSON'S STORM-PETREL and numbers of NORTHERN
GANNETS were off Jones Beach field 6 on Sunday.

A BLACK TERN appeared off Robert Moses State Park Sunday, and a STILT
SANDPIPER visited Heckscher State Park on Monday.

To phone in reports on Long Island, call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126,
or weekdays call Tom Burke at (212) 372-1483. This service is
sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the National Audubon
Society.
