A day spent birding (9:15-3:30) along the barrier beach strip from
Jones Beach west end to Captree State Park did not turn up any vagrant
kingbirds of any species, the continuing strong SW wind making for tough
birding in general. But some good birds were to be had. A CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW was making use of the "hedge" in front of the Coast Guard station
at west end, and a BLUE GROSBEAK was nearby, seen briefly atop some vines
growing on the station's western fence, then flying over to a nearby poplar
tree before continuing westward. Little of note was found during visits to
Tobay, East Gilgo, Overlook Beach, and Oak Beach Road, heading east along
Ocean Parkway. The result was the same at Robert Moses State Park, until
I encountered another 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, seen together along the
entrance road to the park administration building. This was around 3:00.
An E. Wood Pewee was also in the vicinity. I finished up an Captree Island,
where 2 of the 3 immature Little Blue Herons seen by Michael McBrien
Saturday were still present.
