Brad Walker, Shawn Billerman, Nick Sly, and I birded various spots along Cayuga and Seneca lakes today before making our way up to the Rochester area and other points along Lake Ontario. It was pretty quiet in general, but we saw a few interesting birds, most of which have already been reported.
Seneca Lake State Park - we searched for the eider that was reported last weekend without luck. A single female BLACK SCOTER was hanging out in the large goldeneye flock, and seven Tundra Swans were foraging with lots of dabblers including a few Norther Pintail near the east end. Irondequoit Bay Outlet - the SNOWY OWL was perched on some driftwood on the shoreline east of the mouth of the bay, visible from the jetties looking back to the shore. Lots of Red-throated Loons and Long-tailed Ducks here as usual. Sodus Bay Outlet - 7 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 1 juvenile SANDERLING, and 1 DUNLIN at the base of the east jetty and along the inner shore (viewed--somewhat distantly--from the park on the west side). Also a flyover immature (probably 1st cycle) GLAUCOUS GULL, White-winged Scoter, and dozens of Horned Grebes. Also, the three PURPLE SANDPIPERS were still on the sheltered beach side of the breakwall at Fair Haven State Park around midday yesterday, and the 1st cycle THAYER'S GULL continues to be seen at several locations here in Ithaca yesterday and today, as well as at least two different ICELAND GULLS. The EARED GREBE that spend the day at the south end of Cayuga Lake on Friday has not been refound this weekend. -Jay -- Jay McGowan Ithaca, NY jw...@cornell.edu -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
