Land bird migrant arrivals were plentiful this day, with some super reports
from various locations. Central Park in Manhattan had a good mix by all
reports, with the KENTUCKY Warbler still being found in the same part of the
Loch, as well as a multitude of new and recent arrivals. Over in Brooklyn
(Kings Co.) the action may have been if anything even heavier, with at least 25
species of wood-warblers being tallied collectively by the Prospect regulars on
the day, highlighted by a YELLOW-THROATED Warbler. as well as both male &
female Golden-winged Warblers, along with many other migrants, some of which
also had been found in Central Park, such as Olive-sided Flyctacher,
Yellow-billed Cuckoo,& others. A rundown of the highlights from Prospect Park
is available on Peter Dorosh's northern Brooklyn birding blog. My own small
sampling of the day's activity was in Riverside Park on the west side of upper
Manhattan, where among others there were Tennessee and adult Mourning Warblers,
plus a modest diurnal flight of Purple Finch, and generally a very good
assortment of expected and typical migrants on the date. The activity was
observed mainly in the low 100's blocks within the park, as well as in the 90's
and to the south where on many days in migration season, little activity is
detected. It's quite possible the next day could prove as active, as is being
seen at the moment of another strong nocturnal flight in the region and
especially 'coast-ward'. Common Nighthawks are being seen, as their migration
period moves into its peak. A (group of) species to keep eyes and ears open to
now and in weeks ahead is Red Crossbill, which are showing well in some areas
south &/or east of their typical breeding areas and have been filtering thru
the northeastern states to an increasing extent.

Good birding,

Manhattan
