The HOODED WARBLER found by Peter Morris yesterday was still present this
morning from 8:20-10:00. It was seen by Ken and Sue Fuestel and myself along
the trail heading south from the southeast corner of Southard's Pond. It sang
regularly from both sides of the trail just north of the first foot bridge. The
song is not exactly "textbook" for Hooded, sounding like the Hooded was trying
to imitate the Yellow Warblers in the vicinity. It spent most of the time
moving through the dense understory, singing as it went, only occasionally
moving up to higher exposed perches on the west side of the trail for
longer bouts of song. Needless to say, this behavior and the gray sky made
getting a photograph of reasonable quality nearly impossible. The one time the
bird popped into view close and at eye level an unfortunately placed branch
obscured much of the bird's face. Hopefully the bird will stick around so
others will have better luck.
