At about 5:55 this morning I saw a single Short-eared Owl West of the Fire
Island National Seashore visitor center next to Smith Point county park. I
watched it for perhaps a minute before it dropped out of sight - I hung
around until I thought it was getting too light, but never picked it up
again. Other birds interesting to me there were a Fox Sparrow, 19 American
Pipits, and a Merlin. There was a real Northern Gannet show in the
Atlantic - I counted 1012 of them before I got tired of holding the
binoculars up, but there were more.
