This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of February 17, 2014 Highlights: ----------- BARROW’S GOLDENEYE SURF SCOTER NORTHERN HARRIER WILSON’S SNIPE KILLDEER GLAUCOUS GULL ICELAND GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL SNOWY OWL SAW-WHET OWL NORTHERN SHRIKE LAPLAND LONGSPUR RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD New Arrivals ------------ KILLDEER - 2/21 Brewerton Oswego County WILSON’S SNIPE - 2/22 Fyler Road Madison County RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD - Baldwinsville Onondaga County Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ No reports this week Onondaga County ------------ 2/18: An immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an array of ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Inner Harbor in Syracuse. 2/20: 2 SAW-WHET OWLS were found on the Bog Trail at Beaver lake Nature Center west of Baldwinsville. A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen feeding on a carcass on the ice in the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. 2/21: A SNOWY OWL was seen on Rt. 370 between Baldwinsville and Liverpool. 2/22: 4 GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen at the end of the Creekwalk on Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. 4/23: 4 KILLDEER were seen at the Inner Harbor. Oswego County ------------ 2/19: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted at Derby Hill. 2/20: A female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was spotted on Oneida Lake from the north fisherman’s access in Brewerton. The adult male SURF SCOTER was again seen in Oswego 2/22: The female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was again seen in Brewerton and a WILSON’S SNIPE was also seen. Oneida County ------------ 2/20: A SNOWY OWL was seen near Deansboro south of Utica. Herkimer county ------------ 2/22: A SNOWY OWL was seen on Castle Road north of Utica. Madison County ------------ 2/18: 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on Dugway Road north of Fabius. 2/21: A KILLDEER was seen on Fyler Road north of Chittenango. 2/23: A SNOWY OWL continues at the Fenner Wind Farm.
