On Monday 3/9 on my way to the ferry from NYC I saw a Black Vulture by the
High School in Greenport.
As I had locked myself out of my house later for more than an hour after my
daily walk and had a lot to do around the house I rushed the report with no
details:
I saw the vulture west of the school soaring east(north side of 25) and
descending towards the school. I assumed it was a Turkey Vulture until I
was in line with the school where I saw the vulture beat its wings, and
that is where I first noticed the whitish wing tips and finally the lack of
grey on the underwing which clinched the ID.
In my original report I used the term hovering instead of beating its wings
this was a mistake and it was the moment where I noticed that the vulture
was all BLACK, except the wing tips. I did not see any flash of red in the
head.
This is the second Black Vulture, I have seen in LI. The first was in
Monatuk around 2000, I don't know the exact date as I have lost all my
records when my Thayer's crashed years ago.
