A melanistic male American Kestrel gave me a start this morning as it perched briefly on a W Village rooftop TV antenna. Sooty black wing coverts, belly and flanks were strikingly odd and had me thinking Eur Hobby for a nanosecond. Have been hearing and seeing AmKe in neighborhood regularly but until today not paying very close attention to individuals. This sighting about 2 blocks in from Hudson River Park at Bethune Street.
