Central Park NYC - North End Friday Oct. 21, 2016 OBS: Robert DeCandido, PhD, m.ob. on bird walk starting from the Conservatory Garden at 9am.
A very short bird walk today with steady rain starting at 9:20am. Highlights: Today's best spots were Nutter's Battery, and just west of the Conservatory Garden including the compost area. Lots of Dark-eyed Juncos (125-175), some Song and Chipping Sparrows, and singles of Field and Swamp Sparrow. Duck numbers on the Meer are lower, most of the duckweed having been consumed. Gadwall - 5 Meer Mallard - 10 Meer Northern Shoveler - 5 Meer Ruddy Duck - 5 Meer Herring Gull - 5 flyovers Double-crested Cormorant - flyover Cooper's Hawk - 2 (male flying east from Conservatory Garden at 105th St., probable female soaring overhead) Red-tailed Hawk - 2 (adult & immature at compost area) Blue Jay - a few White-breasted Nuthatch - above Conservatory Garden (Tom Ahlf) Golden-crowned Kinglet - 1 Nutter's Battery Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 8 various locations (4 at Nutter's Battery) Hermit Thrush - 3 - Wildflower Meadow, north of Lasker rink/Pool, etc. (2 feeding on Pokeweed berries) American Robin - a few Gray Catbird - 2 Wildflower Meadow Northern Mockingbird - 1 compost area above conservatory Garden (Linda Yuen) Magnolia Warbler - 1 Nutter's Battery Blackpoll Warbler - 1 NW Meer Yellow rumped Warbler - 5 Various locations Chipping Sparrow - 20 - west of Conservatory Garden Field Sparrow - 1 Nutter's Battery Song Sparrow - 20-30 (20 west of Conservatory Garden, 10 Nutter's Battery) Swamp Sparrow - 1 Nutter's Battery Dark-eyed Junco - 125-175 (125 West of Conservatory Garden, 50 at Nutter's Battery) Common Grackle - flock of around 50 heading north over Nutter's Battery Pine Warbler was inadvertently omitted from yesterday's Central Park report (Oct. 20) - my apologies.
