Late this afternoon a KIRTLAND'S WARBLER was found in Central Park. Many
local birders hustled over to enjoy this bird as it fed in oaks near the
northwestern corner of the Central Park reservoir. This area can be
accessed from Central Park West at 91st Street and the oaks are near West
Drive. Hopefully the KIRTLAND'S will continue for the weekend.

On Wednesday a MISSISSIPPI KITE was spotted moving east fairly high over
Hempstead Lake State Park. Recognizably photographed before it disappeared.
This sighting was preceded by another MISSISSIPPI KITE nicely photographed
last Saturday over Stony Point State Park along the Hudson River in
Rockland County. A week ago last Friday a raptor seen in the Montauk area
was believed to be possibly a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE but quickly disappeared.

A BROWN PELICAN was spotted sitting on rocks at Orient Point on Tuesday and
2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were also still lingering there.

A nice but not overwhelming week for landbirds. About 33 species of
warblers including the KIRTLAND'S graced our city parks this week.
Highlights included single PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS last Saturday in Hempstead
Lake State Park, Prospect Park and Central Park the latter continuing to
Tuesday plus one in Forest Park today. The YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
continues at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum and KENTUCKY WARBLERS were noted
this week in Central Park last weekend, Prospect Park last Saturday and
Forest Park yesterday. While YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were spotted at Jamaica
Bay Wildlife Refuge last Saturday and Prospect Park Sunday and at the South
Shore Nature Center in East Islip today. CERULEAN WARBLERS appeared at
Hempstead Lake State Park last weekend and Prospect Park last Saturday and
in Central Park today. Other warblers enjoyed in the parks this week
included WORM-EATING, TENNESSEE, HOODED, CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED,
BLACKBURNIAN, CANADA and WILSON'S.

A male DICKCISSEL was photographed back on the 3rd at Lutheran Cemetery in
Queens. One or two SUMMER TANAGERS were present in Central Park Saturday to
a least Thursday with another in Forest Park Sunday and Monday and BLUE
GROSBEAKS visited Central, Prospect and Forest Parks during the week. A
PHILADELPHIA VIREO was spotted along the road at Cupsogue County Park in
West Hampton Dunes today and single CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were found this
week in Central Park Saturday and at Kissena Park in Queens Wednesday.

An increase in flycatchers this week featured an OLIVE-SIDED in Prospect
Park Tuesday and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER first reported on Monday. A
CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW was heard Monday at the Brookside Preserve in Baldwin. A
nice little push of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS into our area included one or
two in Central Park this week, another in Forest Park Monday, one in
Cunningham Park Monday and again today and one today at Crab Meadow Beach
in Fort Salonga.

A nice number of shorebirds at Cupsogue County Park today included 4
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS while Timber Point Golf Club Marina Marsh hosted 3
STILT SANDPIPERS Tuesday with 2 still there Thursday and another
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. Big Egg Marsh in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge had a
number of RED KNOTS and other shorebirds this week.

A CASPIAN TERN visited Hempstead Lake State Park Thursday that same day
finding an ICELAND and 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Robert Moses State
Park.

To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126 or
