New York County, including Roosevelt Island, Randall’s Island, Manhattan & surrounding waters -
Wed., March 31st

The long-staying female Western Tanager continued at Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan, seen mostly at & near a feeder array as described in prior reports.

At least one extremely early (male) N. Parula was seen by many (& photo’d) at Central Park in Manhattan on Wednesday, March 31st. This may be among the earliest documented dates for this species in N.Y. state, and in any case is ahead of expected *first* arrival dates for the local area, and well ahead of peak spring arrival for the region.

An Orange-crowned Warbler also continued at Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan, and again seen more generally were Pine & Palm Warblers, albeit in still-modest numbers spread around the county. At least one Yellow-rumped Warbler has been continuing, while in the county just south (Kings Co.) in NYC, Louisiana Waterthrush had arrived.

An E. Meadowlark was found & photo’d on 3/31 (G. Hong) on Roosevelt Island (in the East River just east of Manhattan, and part of N.Y. County as well). An Iceland Gull was seen and photo’d at Randall’s Island, and the long-staying adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was also seen there (both, M.B. Kooper, also on Wed.)

Some other migrants showing on Wed. included Osprey, both Kinglet species, and other lingering birds, with a few spp. showing slight increases. Many migrants also have bypassed / overflown the county to reach points farther north.

Lingering waterfowl for N.Y. County has included Brant, Wood Duck, Hooded & Red-breasted Mergansers, Ruddy Duck, and a number of others. We will be on the lookout for the possibility of arriving Blue-winged Teal, an uncommon migrant for the county.

Good April birding to all,

Tom Fiore
