Fairly early (but, a couple of hours past day-break) on Tuesday, August 16th, a
Little Blue Heron (non-adult plumage) was found at Sherman Creek (next to
Swindler Cove Park) just north of the eastern terminus of Dyckman St., in
northern Manhattan (in N.Y. City) - thanks to M. Ryan for photo-documenting the
rare-in-the-county heron. As many New York state (& some New England) birders
know, Little Blues have made a lot of visits to inland, and occasionally
far-inland, &/or also odd-spots, in the summer months, perhaps increasingly so.
Still a very uncommon find in N.Y. County and, if seen at all, generally to be
‘expected’ in summer, with mid-July a possible-peak period, but a few have been
earlier than that, & also later-season than now. Also, on Tuesday, other
observers coming to the same site later on were not re-finding the Little Blue,
although it is possible it may still be in the vicinity.

Good diversity was otherwise again noted, from any number of areas of the same
county for Tuesday bird findings. A female-plumaged Blue-winged Teal was
reported again, from “The Pool” in Central Park on Tuesday, 8/16, in the p.m.
hours.

Peaceful birding to all,

Tom Fiore
