There are two problems:
1) An exception occurs at line 434 when the scheduler is initialized.
2) The exception bubbles up and through the finally block in the init(...)
method and is silently swallowed.
Logging information about the exception is a good minimum to put in place,
although understanding why the shutdown() call is commented out would also be
nice.
