Fisrt: Is the 400493 I.D. number on a 455 Olds forged crank supposed to be
stamped on the crank somewhere?
Second: There is a 455 Olds forged crank on eBay at 8045390901 right now. My
cousin, Matt, wants to bid on it. The eBay photos didn't correctly show me
the forging parting line, except at the bottom, which was unclear, but
seemed to be a thin line. I told Matt to ask the questions of the seller
listed below. The seller's response is also below. The seller did send the
asked for picture, which I can't get on the list but can send to anyone who
wants to see it privately, but it showed the correct wide forging parting
line where the forging flash was ground off. The seller stated the 400493
number isn't found on the crank. Is that correct??? Is the picture of the
same crank??? I'm a bit confused, since I never bothered to look for a
forging number on my forged crank 33 years ago when I got it, but I wouldn't
remember it anyway.
The crank does seem to be a correct forged crank, but the eBay picture still
disturbes me. The absence of the 400493 on the crank also disturbes me. I'm
just not sure.

here is a pic of the forging line. This crank doesn't have casting #'s

Late [1968 and up] big blocks: 400, and 455's. Forged. Mystery crank -
reputed to have been used in '68 Toronado, but found in a 1968 low comp.
2bbl fullsize motor. ID number 400943. Notch on back drive flange is "L"
or
"check mark" shaped, like other forged cranks, but is really like a "J".
The
notch is just like the "L" notch except for the corner will be nicely
rounded where one leg meets the other. Check the casting parting line:
wide
means forged, narrow means cast.

I'm thinking about bidding, but first I'd like to see a couple of high
resolution pics of the following specific areas on the crank.
1) picture of the forging number on the crank
2) picture of the front end of the crank showing the front end of the
crank
pin for #s 1 and 2 rods so that I can see the forging parting line.
