Thanks for the feedback! I have a question about the vacuum hose off the manifold. When the previous owner rebuilt the motor he may have changed the cam shaft making it a bit more aggressive. Is it possible that it doesn't create enough vacuum to work the tranny properly?

No. The amount of vacuum required is small, nowhere near the vacuum capacity required to operate power brakes. Or put another way, not unless your engine idles at 1500 and you need to use a 9" torque converter with a 5500 RPM stall. :-)))

However, you could have a bad vacuum modulator. That should have been checked during the transmission rebuild, or simply replaced out of hand. You could also have a bad vacuum hose. If you are still using the stock steel line going to the modulator, the little u-shaped connecting hose at the modulator could be bad. You might have a bad hose at the intake manifold, if so used.
