If you suspect firmware, you could try upgrading one of the "bad"
drives and see if the cksum errors stop.  You could try detaching one
drive from each controller (i.e. one "good" and one "bad") and
attaching them to the other.  That might indicate whether the problem
follows the controller or the drive.
