Then let me rephrase my question, given my possibly faulty assumptions:

        DO WE NEED TO SCRAMBLE TO REPLACE in.ftpd IF IT'S YANKED OUT?

Given Eric's arguments, the answer is no.  I can be convinced of "yes", but 
it'll take more convincing now.  ("No" is less work for me, so I'm biased.  :) )
