What needs to happen is that some core illumos-omnios packages need to always update regardless of "-r". Rich Lowe gave me a suggested set of diffs: https://gist.github.com/richlowe/c88e6defa0eba09e1a00 I may need to include those going forward. . . . It seems, however, the general consensus is "Yeah, let's not make -r implicit, and document the new behavior." I'm okay with this, especially given how it behaves with "pkg update -r <specific-package>". Thank you everyone!
