An interesting comment is:

"i686-darwin is not supported in any way shape or form for
GCC's before 4.2.0", comment made by Andrew Pinski of GCC.
This also means that the FSF GCC is really only usable with
powerpc-darwin7, and that it's better to use Apple's GCC ?

So the question is more whether you want to repackage/rebuild
cctools and gcc for OpenPKG or just use the Apple binaries,
then whether to try using FSF versions of binutils and gcc.
(at least if trying to support Mac OS X versions beyond 10.3)
