hmm, might be a problem with slightly older gcc (4.4.5 on Fedora 13
works fine for me). Can you try putting a typename in there like this:
FieldDescriptionBase *returnValue = new typename Self::Description(...);
That might help it figure out that it in fact is seeing a type.
