a OpenGL context is needed to test availability of and to gain access to
extension functions and Window is OpenSG's context abstraction.
I'm obviously biased, but to me it does not seem unreasonable to go
through the context abstraction to obtain extension functions?

Possibly. I'm not sure if GLEW existed when OpenSG was started or how
usable it was at the time and on the platforms that where important (to
Dirk, Gerrit and Johannes) then.
