I don't think there's much I disagree with here. Libguestfs is useful for injecting "firstboot" scripts (scripts that run the first time a guest boots and then disable themselves). That seems simpler than the DHCP-based method you outlined, at least for guests that libguestfs can recognize. But probably it's a good idea to support many different methods.
As an aside, I hope to add Cirros detection to libguestfs soon.
