Those keyboard settings can be tricky at times. Just to get things
straight, you need to work out if its a problem with the Linux X11
configuration (check the desired characters on a Terminal) or a rdp issue.

My approach would be something like

a) open a terminal and check the characters,
b) if that doesn't work, try to  load the keyboard keymap manually via
"setxkbmap br abnt2" and go to a) (for the programmers among us, if you
are on this line for the first time :) )
c) if a) succeded try rdesktop / freerdp,
d) if not, it's more work to do and we are (in the context of the free
support on this list) ouf of game *
e) if it works on linux but not within rdesktop / freerdp you can tweak
the keyboard paramter "-k" with either "pt_BR" or "none" , if that
doesn't work same condition as e)

"variant" is the X11 idiom for a subclass of a keyboard layout. E.G you
have the same layout with and without dead keays.
