The question is, how you would then upgrade the device, even if you had access through ssh?

That would be the smallest problem, maybe writing/compiling a little http/ftp/zmodem/whatever-server...? :)

The only real problem is this not beeing able to get acces, the rest would be simple.

For the hacker's delight I would give a try to find the private ssh key in the Windows TomTom Software. Maybe they were lazy enough to put it in plaintext somewhere.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so.

As far as I can see they don't use ssh for anything at all, not even for upgrading (they seem to do that via port 80 and xml via http, using signed packages).

I think they implemented that ssh-stuff for things like debugging or to give their support a possibility to fix a device remote or such.

Don't know for sure.
