Killed in Van Anti-terrorism Operation A Turkish soldier and four Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) terrorists were killed in an anti-terrorism operation carried out in the eastern Turkish province of Van. On Friday, Turkish security forces patrolling the rural area near the Ercis district of Van encountered a group of PKK terrorists. Two PKK militants and a government-paid village guard were killed in the ensuing clash. Military officials stated that reinforcement units had been dispatched to the area to track down the terrorists. The security forces, reinforced with air and gendarmerie Special Forces, continued their operations in the area and pursued the group of PKK terrorists that killed the village guard and faced them in a rocky area near Kardogan village. Four more terrorists were killed and a sergeant was wounded in the gun battle. The sergeant, Mustafa Yildiz, was taken to Van Military Hospital via helicopter; however, he succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. Military officials said that four kilos of plastic explosives, nine hand grenades, a hand gun, four Kalashnikovs and 25 cartridge clips were found on the terrorists. Terrorist activities across Turkey experienced a resurgence following the ending of the unilateral cease-fire of the PKK terrorist organization two years ago. Two hundred twenty-four Turkish security force personnel have now been killed in PKK attacks since June 2004. Blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the E.U., Australia and Canada, the PKK claimed the lives of more than 30,000 people in Turkey between 1984 and 1999.
