Monday, November 5, 2007; A12 A group of 11 detainees who had been held at the U.S. military <http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/U.S.+Armed+Forces?tid=infor mline> detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba <http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Guantanamo+Bay?tid=informli ne> , have been transferred to the custody of their home countries in recent days, according to the Defense Department <http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/U.S.+Department+of+Defense? tid=informline> . Department officials said yesterday that eight detainees were transferred to Afghanistan <http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Afghanistan?tid=informline> and three to Jordan, decreasing Guantanamo's detainee population to about 320. More than 450 detainees have been transferred or released since the facility opened in 2002. There are about 80 other detainees who have been cleared for release or transfer to other countries, but U.S. officials are still negotiating with other nations to do so. Defense officials have said they hope to try approximately 80 additional detainees at military commissions. It is unclear what would happen to the roughly 160 remaining detainees who the United States deems too dangerous to release but who will not go to trial.
