Subject: [Owfs-forums] [owfs - Help] Problem with DS2482-800 and cable
>50meters
By: pascalbaerten
I have setup an home automation system based on NSLU2 (with debian) and two
DS2482-800 on the I²C interface giving 16 onewire lans available.
Theses 16 lans are splits to 4 'hubs' of four ports each connected via CAT5
cables.
The hubs are simple circuits converting RJ45 to four RJ11 and adding +5V and
+12V from external power source.
Things are OK at the output of every hubs. The cables between the master and
the hubs range from 10 to 30 meters.
However, one lan is going to the far end of the garden (50meters of CAT5
cable).
At this location temp sensor DS18B20 is working ok but the DS2413 (par) is
not
discovered.
(This is quite annoying because the DS2413 is feeding food to the chickens!
:-)
I should add that the devices where working OK on the same cables when a
DS2490
was used as master.
I read in the DS2482-800 datasheet that the setting APU (Active Pull Up) is
recommanded for cable lenghts>30meters.
Is there a way to set this flag for owserver?

Feeding chickens, interesting!
I looked at the DS2482-100 Datasheet
http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS2482-800-DS2482S-800.pdf
I see the discussion on page 6 of Active Pullup. I must admit I didn't
realize APU didn't require external hardware.
Activating APU is trivial, just changing a bit in the code. Is there any
reason to make this an option? What is the downside to APU? Will it break
existing implementations?
We could create a command line option, but I like to add options only if
there is a reason to choose.
