I still get this in Ubuntu 8.10

$ ls -al /dev/ttyUSB0
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 2009-07-31 11:13 /dev/ttyUSB0

I have also blacklisted wire and ds2490, I don't know if this affects 
the group id.

If linkusb it's still not working try change uucp to tty.
chggrp tty /dev/ttyUSB1 (temporarily to see if it helps.)
I didn't  find a way to mod udev that worked.
