This is with owfs-2.7pl36, but happened with older versions of the code too.
>From time to time, I've been getting the short circuit error message in my
logs, and after 6 months of logging and correlation I am now sure that it
happens when my server is actually very busy and likely blocked on IO when
I'm doing big batches of writes.
After that condition goes away, the short circuit messages go away too.
I also get some occasional reads of 185F around resets.
After that the high load, it all goes away and everything works great again.

I have 1-wire failure detection code that resets power to the 1-wire hub if
required and filtering code that removes bad values, so it's not the end of
the world for me, except for my 8 channel I/O that seems to be reset its
first channel to 1 instead of 0 after resets sometimes.
Hope the feedback helps, even if it may not be easy to fix this.
