Hi Matthew, taking your advice to the letter I investigated further and
discovered that there is no IIS site by that name on the server indicated. It
only exists on the server hosting Central Administration.
So why would SharePoint think there is??
Clearly the web.config file is more than just invalid - it's non-existent! :)

Nothing amiss in the config file.
Can't hit the URL because no root site has been created. This just seems to be
the default app that gets created when running the config wizard.
Has no one else seen this? Or are we the only ones who ran the wizard? :)

What happens when you hit the site in a browser? Do you get an ASP.NET error?
I'd probably take this one literally, and crack open the web.config and make
sure there's no missing end tags, or that there's no typo's. Check the event
log on the server as well, you should get a more detailed callstack from
ASP.NET about why it can't parse the web config. (fwiw:
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\*)

OK. Better question. Can it be deleted?
This app was apparently created automatically when running the config wizard.

Hi all,
I'm continuing to see the following error during deploy/retract for WebApp
scoped solutions. I am deploying to "All content Web applications'.
SharePoint - 80 : Error: The web.config is invalid on this IIS Web Site
It seems that this site is treated as a Content web application. Is this
normal because I can't find anything on the Net.
Cheers,

Paul
