There are a number of utilities and tray widgets that inform you of updates. Many of these are poorly written accidents waiting to happen, because they essentially run pacman -Sy in cron.
Here is a little script, checkupdates, that handles this in a safe and sane fashion. I feel it would make a good addition to pacman-contrib. Thoughts? -Kyle http://kmkeen.com
