Richard, The problem is indeed due to offscreen rendering. I've added a bug (http://paraview.org/Bug/view.php?id=11847). Until this is resolved, the work-around would be to uncheck "Use offscreen rendering for screenshots" in Edit | settings dialog (Render View page).
