Hi Sarah, one piece of advice re the archos, you can indeed play
audible books, I have a similar device and have converted the files
very successfully.

1. Download Goldwave, the sound editor, if you don't already have it.

2. Register it, as you're gunna want to keep it.

3. Install it.

4. Install the lame encoder if it's not already on your system, if
you've got anything like winamp, CDexe, and so on, then it will
already be there, and goldwave will find it.

5. Open the programme you will have an empty editing screen.

6. hit alt-f then go down to open. press "enter" and you'll have the
open file dialogue.

7. use the browser to find the directory where your audible files are
kept. Note: if you've still got the defaults set, it will be
C:\program files\audible\download\

8. Click on one of the files in there, (not in the in progress
directory) and the file will open. Note that this will take some
minutes, as the programme converts the file first to .wav format.

9. go back into the file menu, select save as, and change the name to
something which gets rid of all the extra crap that audible insert
into there file names. You don't need to put the .mp3 extension in.

10. tab through the dialogue until you get to file types. Select mp3
from the list that appears.

11. continue through the dialogue until you get to attributes. it may
be the next tab, but I can't check immediately as I don't have access
to it on this computer.

12. Select an appropriate sample rate and bit rate for your book.
I'd suggest that 22500 and 48KBS would be ample, though the equivalent
quality of MP3's isn't as good as .ogg files of the same bit-rate. If
it were .ogg, I'd suggest 35KBPS as being fine, however I don't think
the archos players will play ogg vorbis files. Basically have a play
and decide how low you're prepared to go. You might need to check that
your archos will play lower rate MP3 files, I've never used the
device.

13. click save, having first checked where the file will be saved to,
and changing that if necessary. I tend to save mp3's in my normal
audio books folder, and leave the audible books right where they are,
out of the way of anything else.

14. Presumably you can simply use windows explorer or my computer to
transfer the files to the archos.

Question from a total, how the hell do you manage to navigate your way
round one of those hard disk MP3 players? I have the odyssey from
edigital, and whilst it has speech recognission for the file names,
unless the filenames are formatted correctly it doesn't work. Also
you can't browse, and there's no access to the menus. as I said, but
it's stayed in the cupboard since it nearly had an impromptu and hard
meeting with a wall. I just can't work out what I've selected, change
the menu options, or browse what's on the disk. I here these amazing
blind people ! grin, saying that they remember what's on their HD
player, but I'm sorry, my parents didn't pay for that upgrade at
birth, and it can't be fitted now I expect.

Other listers will doubtless point out that you can add effects, edit
the sound file and so on, but I'm giving you a simple method to start.

It's not essential to register immediately, as you can do 150 commands
with the unregistered version per session, with an overall count of
3000 commands before you have to register.

HTH, and if you need any further help, I'm happy to do so.

Subject: accessable site to download mp3's

Hi guys:
I finally have time to get back on this list. A while ago I asked for
accessible mp3 players. Well, after much help from this group, I
bought the
Archos mp3 player/recorder. I like it. One drawback is it can't play
books
from audible.com. Oh well, my question is I am looking for an
accessible and
legal site to download mp3's that I can put on my player. There are so
many
sites with software that you have to download that I'm not sure what
would
be the best. I don't want to crash my computer either. I use jaws and
Windows XP.
Thanks for the help,
Sarai and Rosie, Proverbs 3:5,6 "Trust in the Lord with all your
heart,
                          And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths."
