Ah, that makes sence then. Does audition incide on both lossi and losless
formats? ah nevermind I'll find out.

Hi,

There is a loss-less format of .WMA not just .WMA in general. The one you
are speaking of is lossy and not lossless.

ctually I hear artifacting in wma files at 128kbps. How could that be
losless?

Hi Andre.

The answer to your question is - yes, WMA lossless is exactly that -
completely free of any compression or psycho-acoustic dabbling. The sound
quality is identical to that provided by the equivalent WAV file but the
file size is smaller due to what is known as lossless compression, reduction
in file size with no change to sound quality.

With regards to the CBR versus VBR debate, this is subjective depending on
what bit rates you wish to use. VBR is a technology that's all about
attempting to retain quality but achieving a smaller file size so if you
ripped at 320kbps CBR then you're not going to get better results using
VBR - only smaller file sizes. However, if you really needed to compress
your files due to lack of storage space then VBR will yield better results
than CBR as it will calculate which frames in the MP3 or WMA file require
the most bits and which can get away with less depending on the complexity
of the music in that frame. A frame is generally a snippet of the music in
the order of 0.02 seconds and so a track is made up of thousands of frames.

VBR at it's highest quality setting will provide a better quality than
VBR/ABR as the latter will attempt to keep a fairly constant line at the
given bit rate chosen and so will have less to play with with regards to
maintaining quality.

You can make some errors when choosing VBR settings especially with rippers
such as CDEX where you can change all of the lame encoder parameters without
warning as to what the potential results might sound like.

All of this is subjective and depends where you are going to listen to your
music. If you're listening exclusively on a computer or portable device,
you're not going to be able to tell the difference between say playing a CD
on that computer and playing back a track ripped at quite a low bit rate.
However, if you play back the files through a very good hi-fi system then
you're going to want to hear all of the detail at the top and bottom ends of
the music spectrum and so here's where lossless formats win hands down.
Lossless is also the way to go if you're archiving your collection to ensure
that you have the best available copy for future use.

Regards.

Kevin
