While Goldwave can manipulate so-called "Media Foundation" M4A files, what can handle, and extract video from, .MP4 files? MP4 is the new de facto standard for distributing standard-definition TV content on Usenet. It's almost as small as the former .AVI (DirectShow) format (also referred to as DivX or XVid), from which Goldwave can extract audio.
