Nah, you forget correction needed for aberrations. And things are never equal in the 
real world. Not many single element designs even now. But I admit that there are some 
excellent lenses with small number of elements and in some cases (Leica) newer designs 
with fewer elements have improved correction. And good designers achieve more with 
fewer elements than not-so-good designers with more elements.
