I thought that was why designers _added_ extra elements in the first place!
Why else indeed?

It's not "Gee, I need two more lens surfaces!"
It's more lke, I still have some spherical (or other) abberation, and
I've got as much out of that previous element as I could. We'll just
add one more, and be done with it."
