I finally made it down to Adorama today. I ended up with the Bogen/Manfrotto 3006 monopod - folds down to 20 inches, only weighs a pound. The only problem is that it's silver. Do I need to cover it up with batting tape to prevent glare? I completely forgot about that issue until I got home. :)
I've done it with gaffer tape (only on the top part, of course) and it's about OK as the top part is more easily seen than the lower part(s).
I use the pod without a head, are we a few to do this?
