The16-45 is a real great performer. But the 18-35 is very good for its price - you cannot go wrong with it. It's built quite cheaply but works well. And - you can get it very cheap if bought used. There seem to be many buyer of the *istD/18-35 kit who want to upgrade to the 16-45 (at least here in Germany as there was a time, when you had to buy the kit as the body alone was unavailable).
