About FA 85mm f1.4:

I used it quite a bit at the time, but it was heavy, bulky and had an intimidating hood

The A 85/1.4 "correct" hood is also intimidating, but you can find slimmer 67mm metal screw hoods for both A and FA 85/1.4 lenses.

A good choice is the hood made to shade Super-Takumar 70-150mm f4.5. It is just a bit wider than the 85mm lenses, looks OK and can be reversed (slip-on) on the A lens but won't hold firmly.

It is possible to find one on eBay with a bit of patience. Its black color would render the FA lens more discreet.

Another one that offers the same amount of shading is the 85-210mm f3.5 hood. Best feature is that it screws reversed on the A lens. Unfortunately it is very uncommon. You can see it on Boz's site.

Still another choice, but for the minimalist, is the 45-125mm hood, without the 58-67 step-up ring that is part of the hood but can be removed. Shades a bit and offers some front element protection if you drop the lens. Easy to find, sometimes without the ring.

By the way, this same 45mm f4 hood can also replace the buffet dish that Pentax sells for the A & FA 20mm lenses. If it had only 1 mm longer, the hood would begin to show in the corners of the film, so no filter can be used on the lens with this hood.
