The AF400T might simply not be able to shorten the flash duration enough to work with an ISO 200 sensitivity at macro ranges. Are you stopped down all the way?

Yes. f/32.

It works the same way. The TTL flash metering sensor in the camera has been calibrated to work with the sensor's reflectance.

OK. Then I suspect analog vs. digital flash communication to be the culprit. When I tested my AF400T and AF500FTZ for macro use with the Z-1 or the LX, the situation was that the AF400T gave good exposures while the AF500FTZ gave too much light. With the *istD, it's the other way around. Curiously, it's stated in the manual for the 500 that it should not be used for closeup photograpy (less than 120 cm), while the 400T is claimed to be useable. However, Pentax' cameras were not (afaik) equipped to make use of distance information in calculating flash exposure when the FTZ flashes were introduced. It certainly applies to the LX, but I think also for the Z-1.

IIRC, the *istD manual claims that both flashes are useable, but without specific mention of macro.
