I was uploading another batch of photos and decided on a whim to make this one (which I uploaded last week) a PAW.

This photo seems to be very dependent on the monitor and viewing conditions. The foreground is meant to be reasonably dark.

I may as well show the accompanying view north towards Lyttelton Harbour, the shipping port of Christchurch city which they conveniently put on the other side of the hills. I remember reading somewhere that the settlers considered building the city around this harbour, but somebody sensible decided that building on the plain would be a better idea.

Lyttelton is actually a flooded volcano which is supposedly extinct... there's a good overhead view of the peninsula here which shows what's left of both the Lyttelton and Akaroa volcanoes.
