You may still be able to recover it.  Try looking for a deleted file
with the original file name.   Many apps don't actually overwrite the
file when you save instead what they do is they write a new file to a
temp filename, and when the temp file is completely written, delete
the original file and rename the temp file to the original filename.
If PS behaves like this then you should be able to undelete the file
quite easily with one of a zillion recovery tools that exist.

Many apps use this methodology as "insurance" to protect the original
file from corruption should something "happen" while saving.

I think PS works this way because i've seen temp files show up when
saving large files.

Give it a shot you may be able to recover your layered file after all
